Risk Information:
Contraindications : Licorice and curcumin (high dose) are considered unsafe during pregnancy. Safety data is lacking for use during lactation, and in children, though no specific contraindication is known. Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you have gallstones, stomach ulcers, excess stomach acid, liver disorder or liver disease. Consult a health care practitioner if symptoms persist or worsen. Do not use if you have hypokalemia, high blood pressure or a kidney or cardiovascular disorder, or if you have a bile duct obstruction. Hypersensitivity is known to occur, in which case, discontinue use.
Interactions : Licorice may be contraindicated with the use of potassium depleting diuretics as well as vasodilators (dilate the vascular system to treat heart conditions), and any product to treat atrial fibrillation (a heart rhythm disorder), anti hypertensives (for high blood pressure) due to the potential for hypokalemia. Alpha-lipoic acid may have a hypoglycemic effect, and may need close monitoring in individuals taking antidiabetic therapy. Because Schisandra induces P450 2C9 activity, medications metabolized by this enzyme, such as blood thinners, antiplatelets, or anticoagulants, need close monitoring. Curcumin may also increase bleeding risks if taking anticoagulants. Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you are taking anti-diabetes. Do not use if you are taking diuretics, anti-Hypertensives (for high blood pressure), immune-suppressants, stimulant laxatives or other products that may aggravate electrolyte imbalance.
